| Mary, Sweet potatoes are planted from "slips" (sprouts which have been broken off the potato). To grow slips during the early summer, lay the sweet potatoes on their sides and cover them with 2 inches of moist sand. When the sprouts develop, remove them with a twisting tug and pot them up for rooting and growing into new plants. You can also plant them right into the growing location. If you keep them moist by watering them daily for a week or so they will root and grow fine. Additional transplants (slips) will form from the bedded sweet potatoes if left in place. Segments of growing vines can also be rooted if you wish to make more plants than the above method provides. Thanks for the question.
