| I'm looking for ideas of what type of shrub to plant in a flower bed. The spot has full sun, early morning/early afternoon. Soil is ok, I've had little like with azela's, because of the soil/sun. I'm going to put some weigela and would like another type of plant to compliment this. I want it to be evergreen and flowering. Any suggestions. |
| Unfortunately I am unable to think of an evergreen to meet those requirements. Some of the cotoneasters may be evergreen most years and do bloom, but the bloom is not showy. They do however produce attractive berries later in the season. The various euonymous fortunei shrubs are evergreen and would do very well there but do not bloom. Pieris japonica would be an evergreen and would flower in those lighting conditions (sun all morning until early afternoon) but it requires an evenly moist yet well drained, acid soil rich in organic matter just as the azaleas do. For blooms and some winter structure (but not an evergreen) you might consider the smaller summer flowering spireas, or perhaps a small rose. A smaller hydrangea might also do.
