Diatomaceous earth is ground up diatomite, a naturally occurring form of silica that was originally algae long, long ago. The sharp bits cut into the slugs and cause them to dehydrate and die. Slugs can also be trapped using beer as bait and can be hand picked and dropped in soapy water.
