The Q&A Archives: Controlling Fungus Gnats

Question: I have started a variety of seeds indoors and they are doing well. However, I've noticed that fungus gnats are starting to appear in the area of the seed flats. I've used Safer's Insecticidal soap for my established houseplants, but I'm not sure if it's too strong for my seedlings. How fast can fungus gnats damage the roots of my seedlings? Thank you for your help! G. Williams Chelmsford, MA

Answer: The easiest way to control fungus gnats is with yellow sticky traps. You can make them yourself. Paint a piece of wood or cardboard yellow and cover with vegetable oil or anything sticky and clear. Suspend above the plants. The gnats are attracted to the color yellow. You should be able to trap out most of the trouble makers!
