I am not aware of any special variety called Pie Plant specifically. As far as I know, any garden variety of rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum) makes wonderful pie and "Pie Plant" is in fact another generic or common name people use for rhubarb. Your mother may however have known of someone who had a particularly good tasting plant or variety. Burpee sells a named variety of rhubarb in this year's catalog.(800-888-1447 to order or ask for a catalog, or see the web site at http://www.burpee.com).
