The Q&A Archives: Using Morning Glories as a Chainlink Fence Cover

Question: I want to cover a chainlink fence, but slats are too expensive. I started morning glories from seed and want to know if they would make a good cover for my chainlink fence? I really don't want to clean up dead vines every winter. Do they stay greenall year? And do they reseed? Should I remove the vines ever year? Thanks for any help. Shelli Walton Estacada, OR

Answer: Morning glories would cover your chainlink fence nicely...HOWEVER, they do not stay green all year long and you would be cleaning dead vines off the fence each fall (or spring if you put it off like I do). Morning glories do reseed themselves-however...if you are growing hybrids morning glories, they may not reseed as aggressively as the species types. It's probably best to start your own seed every year -- especially if you wish to grow a specific hybrid.
