The Q&A Archives: Planting Begonia Tubers

Question: What direction do I plant the begonia bulbs, curved side up (like a mushroom) or curved side down? Doug Kemme Greeley, CO

Answer: Plant your tuberous begonias curved side down. Plant them outside after danger of frost has passed and cover them with a couple of inches of soil. Shelter them from wind or support them, as the plants are brittle. Feed them several times during the blooming period with fish emulsion. When the foliage has yellowed after the first frost, dig them up and allow them to dry for a few days. Remove any soil or dead growth and store the tubers in a bag of dry peat at 45-50 degrees F.
