The Q&A Archives: Minimum Sun Requirements for Vegetables

Question: Are there any shade tolerant varieties of tomatoes? I have a small city lot. My neighbor to my south has quite the canopy of very large maple trees. The sun I receive is fitered all day long. Last year I tried "Early Girl", four plants produced one semi-ripe tomato (before they were killed by frost). If not tomatoes than any sugestions? Thank you. Mark Janofsky Batavia, NY

Answer: I afraid there are no fruiting vegetable crops that thrive in the kind of shade you describe. Lettuce and spinach may do okay, and some herbs will perform in shade. Most vegetable crops require at least 5 hours of sun. Do you have a patio or deck in sun where you could grow container plants? If not, maybe it's time for a community garden plot.
