The Q&A Archives: When to Harvest Radishes

Question: I planted radishes this year. They're really taking off well. How do I know when it is time to pick? April Williamson Chesapeake, VA

Answer: Radishes are fun to grow because they mature so quickly - the gardener's version of instant gratification! Most varieties are ready to pick within 25-30 days. Just make sure you take time to thin them so they'll have plenty of room to plump up. They should be thinned to about 1"-2" apart, depending on the mature size of the variety you're growing. Also, make sure you water them evenly. If you have a dry spell and then get a downpour, the roots may swell and split.
