| I grew up in the suburbs and always enjoyed having a rather large. I've recently moved into a new city apartment, and I am looking for a few fruit and/or vegetable plants that I can grow either indoors or in an outdoor window mounting (such as a few strawberry plants, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, etc.) My apartment is on the top (3rd) floor of a house on a corner, with no sunlight-blocking trees directly outside my 3 large, westward-facing, rear windows where I would likely be able to mount windowboxes. Do you have any recommendations for what might work and how to go about creating my "garden"? |
| There are many plants you could experiment with, but I would caution you that the location could pose a challenge--it will likely be very hot and sunny, and, at the third floor elevation, drying winds could be a problem. Also, for large plants like tomatoes, you'll need large containers, and these will be heavy, especially when wet. You might start out with some Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and oregano and perhaps a cherry tomato, as well as the day neutral or everbearing strawberries, and see how they do. For best results, use as large a soil volume as possible. |
