Bearded iris should be cut back to about four to six inches in mid summer when the foliage looks droopy and tattered, but any diseased foliage can be removed sooner. Be sure to remove and destroy iris trimmings to limit the possibility of insect or disease carryover from year to year. The leaves should not be removed too early because they need to grow and replenish the rhizomes for next year.
