My 10-year-old, 12-foot-tall magnolia grandiflora 'edith bogue' drops about a third of its leaves every spring. The tree is otherwise very healthy, blooms profusely, and grows like a weed. What causes the leaf drop? Is it normal or do i have a soil or fertilzer problem?

What you are describing sounds pretty normal. The older leaves fall and are replaced. Hollies do the same thing.
