I need a good shade tree to plant by a koi pond. The leaves that fall into the water must be safe for the fish. Also, it needs to be small as we have a small back yard. What is our best bet?

A few of the trees recommended for landscaping around water gardens include Acer palmatum 'Dissectum' (cutleaf Japanese maple), Betula pendula (white birch), Cornus florida (flowering dogwood), Cornus mas (Cornelian cherry), Stewartia ovata (mountain camellia) and Cercis canadensis (redbud). Hope one of these suggestions appeals to you!
