When and how close to the ground do you prune a banana tree?

Faith,

Bananas do not need to be pruned. Most winters in central Texas will kill the stalks to the ground. Then you simply cut them off a few inches above the ground and they will send up new stalks from the base of the clump. If they make it through a mild winter, like last winter, just let them grow. You might even get fruit from the older stalks later in the year.
