I have a gooseberry plant that I planted last fall. My soil is fairly sandy, although I fortify it with compost and other organic material. This spring, when the leaves began coming out, I noticed that they had small brown spots all over them. I don't see any bugs - any ideas?

It may be anthracnose, a fungal disease that marks the leaves. To control the problem, rake up and dispose of all leaves that fall, and next spring use a lime sulfur spray at budbreak. Good luck!
