The Q&A Archives: Mold on Mulch

Question: I have noticed a sort of fungus appearing on top on my mulch. It looks like foam. I have never had this before. What should I do to prevent this. Is it harmful to my flowers. We have had alot of rain lately. Does this have anything to do with it?

Answer: Moisture and humidity certainly encourage the growth of molds and fungus of all kinds and mulch is no exception. Happily, they are part of the normal decay process and are not harmful to plants. It is not necessary to do anything, but you may be able to disturb it by fluffing the mulch a bit to encourage it to dry out if the appearance bothers you.
