After looking beautiful in the early spring and up until about 2 weeks ago, my river birch trees now are having the leaves about mid way up the tree on all trunks starting to yellow and drop off. Since the temperature lately has been pretty hot and rainfall has not been in abundance, I have been watering the trees deeply about once a week, but it does not seem to be improving them. Any insights you can provide would be appreciated.

Given the extremes in your weather, I suspect your birches are suffering from stress. Since it's early in the growing season your birches will quite likely replace the leaves they have lost to heat stress, and by mid-summer should have a full canopy of healthy, green leaves. Watering the trees deeply once each week is important during the hot weather, so keep up the good work!
