What is the best method and time of year to divide hosta plants?

The best time to divide hostas is during their dormant season, but if you're careful, you can divide them in the early spring or late fall. Dig the plants and divide (with a shovel if necessary!)so that each root mass has a sprout or two. Replant in freshly amended soil and water well after transplanting.
