The Q&A Archives: Reasons for Maple Tree with Peeling Bark

Question: We have a maple tree whose bark is entirely peeling off. There is a large hole and the bark is coming off like a banana peel. What would cause this? Is there anything we can do about it? What will it do to the tree? Pam Richmond Joliet, IL

Answer: Poor tree! The symptom you describe could be caused by a number of things, including bacteria, frost or winter sunscald. My recommendation is for you to have someone local assess the problem to see if there is any way to save the tree. Call your local extension service for their help or for a referral - 815-727-9296.
