Our fava bean plants look good and they are starting to produce beans, but a few of the leaves are starting to turn black and dry around the edges. Is this a disease or some kind of deficiency? What can we do to stop it? |
The symptoms you describe sound like water stress rather than a disease. Beans grow and produce best in neutral to slightly acidic soils (6.0 - 7.0 pH), with regular watering. To help your soil hold necessary moisture, mulch around the plants with aged compost or leaf mold. Inspect your plants for blackened areas on the stems or beans. If the plants are diseased, the symptoms will show up there, too. Rogue out any diseased plants to keep the problem from spreading to other bean plants. |
