| Hello- I am going to be on vacation for 13 days and need a way to water my containers on my patio. I currently water them every day. I read the tip about using liter bottles and inverting them into the soil. I tried that this weekend with 2 liter soda bottles into my tomato plant and the bottles were empty after 8 hours or so. I tried leaving the cap on with a small hole drilled in the top and it was empty after 12 hours. Any suggestions, am I doing something wrong? I don't know if I am going to be able to enjoy my vacation if I am worried about my veggies! Thank you! |
| Sounds like you're doing everything right. As the soil dries out in your containers it will wick the water out of the bottles. You may need more than one bottle per container to keep the plants healthy while you're gone. Another way to help them conserve water is to group your plants together and provide some afternoon shade so evaporation isn't such a problem. Finally, you may have to enlist the aid of a trusted friend or neighbor to check on your plants while you're gone. Hope you have a great vacation! |
