The Q&A Archives: Giant English Onions

Question: Are giant english onions edible? I bought seeds in Canada in 1995 and they survived the winter. Now I am wondering if they are O.K. to eat this year.

Answer: I can't imagine any true onion not being edible. Although I've never heard of giant english onions , what you have could very well be Welsh Onion, a perennial (Allium fistulosum) with edible leaf bases and strong-flavored leaves. Quite popular in Asian cooking.
