The Q&A Archives: Distinguishing Roots from Stems on Bare-Root Plants

Question: My daughter recently ordered bare-root plants and was quite confused as to which end was the root. Any tips for beginner gardeners to help them distinguish the root end from the stem end? Linda Schumacher West Allis, WI

Answer: There should be some small root hairs growing from the root end of the plant, and some kind of visible buds on the stem end. I suggest you contact the source of the plants (did you get them from Burpee?) and find out what is normal for the stock you've purchased.
