The Q&A Archives: Planting Tips for Corn

Question: Please tell me the correct way to plant corn; I fertilize every year, but I still get short stalks and small ears. Am I planting it wrong, it gets plenty of sun and water. I would appreciate your help since this is our favorite vegatable. Thanks. Lillian Curtis Oneida, NY

Answer: Fresh corn sounds pretty good right now! I think the first step should be a soil test. Perhaps the corn isn't getting the nutrients it needs despite your annual fertilizer application. Corn seed should be planted about 1" deep and thinned to 8"-12"apart in the row. Plant the corn in blocks of 4 to 6 rows to ensure that pollination will occur.
