What plants can I plant now to give off aromas and can these be put in a pot rather than the ground?

There are many fragrant plants well suited to growing in pots. You might consider any of the many fragrant herbs such as curry plant, thyme, mint, oregano, basil and so on. The scented geraniums (the foliage is fragrant, not the flowers) and other non hardy plants such as lemon verbena, pineapple sage, and lemon grass are all good options, too. Among flowers, try nicotiana, the "Daddy" series of petunias, sweet alyssum, and selected repeat blooming roses. Many lilies and other fragrant perennials such as dianthus are good additions to a fragrant container garden, but they bloom for only a short period.
