How to keep a flowering almond from drooping as I am training it to espalier along a brick wall. Is there a way to attach it to brick and should I keep pruning it severely. It gets very bushy quickly. Are five branches plenty to create an attractive espaliered shrub. |
Espaliered plants are usually trained along wires attached to the building. You would select a central leader and then allow side branches to grow symmetrically from it. Your almond, however, may not be the best subject for this treatment because it's growth is so lax and it will branch repeatedly each time it is cut. Better specimens might include an apple tree, pyracantha if it is hardy in your area, and other more woody plants. |
