One of the best ways to keep insects off lettuce and other leafy crops is with floating row cover. The spunbound polyester serves as a barrier to flying and crawling insects (if you anchor it securely to the ground!), leaving the crops virtually pest free. The row covers allow light and water to enter, and air to circulate, but effectively keeps insects out. For best results, it needs to be put into place right after you plant your crops.
