Some gardeners report success using animal repellents, either the commercially formulated sprays or home-made mixtures that include garlic and/or red pepper. For bunnies, some people report that a pet dog or cat can be an effective deterrent, too. There are many "folk methods" of repelling deer, ranging from spreading hair obtained from the barbershop to hanging bars of soap in target plants. However, in my experience, the only control that is reliably effective over the long term is a fence. This is especially true if your garden is on the deer trail and they habitually browse it.
