The Q&A Archives: Pruning Tips for Campsis

Question: I planted Campsis M.Galen 2 years ago. Last summer it grew about 5 feet but did not flower. I cut it down to about 3 inches from the ground this spring because the branches looked dead. Should I have left the "dead-like"branches alone? What should I donow. It is starting to grow a little now, about 4 inches, but can I expect blooming this year? I live in Chicago. Thanks. D.Berland Chicago, IL

Answer: You did the right thing! Campsis is a vigorous growing vine that needs to be contained evach year. Prune back to a few buds every spring or it will take over the world!
