Is it safe to till and fertilize an aspargus bed in the fall after the plants have dried up ? |
Tilling would disturb the soil and possibly shred and ruin the crowns and roots. Instead, it would be better to remove the dried fronds after frost has killed them back, and apply a generous layer of compost and/or aged manure, and/or chopped leaves. This will rot down over the winter and feed the soil. In early spring, apply an additional top dressing of compost and/or a complete fertilizer. |
