The Q&A Archives: Creeping Flower for Hot Dry Summers

Question: I have 5 flower boxes on the south side of our home. We have hot dry summers with a lot of wind. Our water has a lot of alkali in it as well. What kind of annual would you recommend for this type of setting? I have my heart set on a creeping type of flower with deep color. Laura Bowker Baker, MT

Answer: Try portulacca. It has a low somewhat creeping habit with bright flowers AND prefers dry soils!
