We have had a phormium tenax (new zealand flax)in our garden in north east England for about ten years.
This July we have had a shoot coming from the centre of the plant. It is now about 3 meters tall. Will it flower?
Should we cut it out? Will it spoil the plant?

Phormium are big, dramatic plants composed of many sword-like, stiffly vertical leaves growing in a fan pattern. When conditions are just right, the plants will flower by sending out tall stems and producing dull red or yellow 1"-2" long flower clusters. I'd say your plant is happy and is rewarding you with blooms! When the blooms are spent you can cut the flowering stems down to foliage level.
