Most shrubs are best fertilized with a top dressing of compost or complete granular fertilizer in the late fall, again in early spring and again in late spring or early summer according to the label instructions. How much and specifically what proportions to use would ideally be based on some soil tests. Your county extension (285-8300) should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results aqccording to whcih kind sof shrubs you are growing. In addition, using an organic mulch will help feed the soil as it breaks down over time.
