Prunus virginiana, the chokecherry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree with 2"-4" long leaves. It grows best in full sunshine and can withstand dry soils, but with regular watering will grow into a 20'-25' tree. Chokecherries sucker freely, so to keep your plant from growing into a thicket of shrubs, remove the suckers as they appear. Your tree shouldn't need any special care other than regular watering during the growing season.
