I planted some osteospermum from seed this spring and they are doing beautifully. The seed package describes them as a half hardy annual. I can't find the definition of that term anywhere. Please help. Thanks.

That means it is not cold hardy, but would be perennial in a warmer area. On the other hand, it will bloom at a young enough age to be worth growing as an annual.
