The Q&A Archives: Why Flowers On Zuchini Are Cut Off

Question: My zuchini plant are glowing very well. I have a fensed in area so no animals can get to my plants. I am dusting to beetles. But many of the flowers which are about 4- 5" in size are being cut off just below the bud. What is happening?

Answer: Zucchini plants produce male and female flowers. What you are most likely seeing is the male flowers falling off. The female flowers should stay on the plant and produce the squash for you. The plant will produce a number of male flowers before it produces the first female bloom to ensure a good source of pollen.
