The Q&A Archives: Mounding Potatoes Tips

Question: How do I go about mounding potatoes after plant starts to come up? How many times do I repeat the process? Thank you. Kelly Davis Columbia City, OR

Answer: About a week after the shoots emerge, gently mound up soil around them until just a few inches of shoot is exposed. Repeat this process in 2 or three weeks. Mounding the soil gives the tubers plenty of room underground to grow--they are less apt to poke through to the surface where they'll turn green if exposed to sunlight.
