I planted a pussy willow this fall. How much can I expect it to grow each year, and how tall will it be at maturity? How should I prune it? |
Pussy willows of different types are all Salix, or members of the willow family, that have attractive catkins or buds. They are fast growing (several feet per year) and prefer a rich moist soil and a sunny location. Since most of the "bushes" are actually trees (usually about 20 feet or more) at maturity, most people will trim them periodically in late winter, both to harvest the catkin-covered branches for bouquets and to control the size of the plant. If you have space for the plant to reach its mature size, routine trimming is not necessary. |
