The Q&A Archives: Leggy Dill and Cantelope Seedlings

Question: I am growing plants from seed-herbs and veggies. Some of the (dill, cantelope) are coming up very leggy . I have a plant growing light on them now for 15 hrs per day. Are they supposed to be like this?

Answer: There are lots of seeds that are best seeded directly to the ground. Such seeds, including melons and dill, grow very poorly under lights and suffer when transplanted. Since melons and dill are fast and easy when sown direct, I suggest you wait until all frosts are past and your soil is warm before sowing (outside).
