I wanted to start a blackberry shrub in my backyard. Can one start a blackberry shrub from a seed? Or do you have to obtain a starter bush from somewhere?

Blackberries won't grow from seed, but you should be able to find a plant at your local garden center. The best varieties for your gardening zone are boysenberries, sometimes marketed under 'thornless' or 'evergreen', with variety names such as 'Cascade', 'Logan' or 'Marion'. These are not the true blackberries you find in other gardening regions, but they're tasty subsitutes and they grow well in your area.
