How can we get rid of the deer eating our tomatoes?

While there are many home remedies such as hanging bars of soap and strewing hair from the barber shop among the plants, and there are some gardeners who report success using the commercial deer repellent sprays or home made sprays based on garlic and/or red pepper, in my own (sad) experience, the most reliable long term control is a tall fence.
