The Q&A Archives: Deterring Dogs from Plants

Question: Here's an age-old question for you -- HOW TO KEEP MY NEIGHBOR'S DOGS AWAY FROM MY PLANTS. I've tried sprays, powders. I'm at my wit's end. Please send help! Fran Cain Smithsburg, MD

Answer: Unfortunately, there's no sure-fire way to keep dogs out of your yard, except a tall fence (or a bigger dog!) It sounds like you've tried some deterrents without success. Dogs' territorial instincts are strong, and it sounds like your neighbors' dogs have decided your yard is now their territory! Can you talk to your neighbors about their dogs' behavior? (Are there leash laws in your city?) If that won't help, the only suggestion I have is to fence off your favorite plants. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
