| our 30 year old peoneis have not bloomed the same since we elevated the soil about 6 inches avd put retaining blocks around them do we need to remove some soil ? add compost ? or do they need to be caged ? thanx! |
| Peonies will not bloom if they are planted too deeply -- they only need about two inches of soil above the eyes or growing points on the roots. Changing the soil level around any plant can be risky, some plants will even die outright as a result of not getting enough air at the roots. If you can remove that extra soil (and the surrounding soil is still at the original level) then they should be okay. If the surrounding soil has also been raised then you will have to lift and replant the peonies to avoid flooding them in rainy periods. This is usually done in the fall. The plants will then take a year or two to settle in and begin blooming again. Take care not to replant them to shallowly or too deeply, remember the two inch guideline. |
