Would roses climb an Arbor in shade? Or should I go with a berry or grape? Any other suggestions? |
Roses generally don't thrive in shade because they need a minimum of six hours of sun a day (with those hours including noon) and prefer sun all day. Although grapes will tolerate partial shade they will not grow as densely as you might like, and may not produce fruit. Berries as a rule need sun. One of my favorite plants for a shady arbor is fall blooming clematis. The foliage is attractive all season and the blooms are fragrant and occur at an unusual time of the year. Another one to consider would be the old fashioned Dutchman's Pipe vine which has large leaves and unusual flowers. |
