The Q&A Archives: African Violets

Question: why do the bottom leaves of my african violets turn yellow? the plants are healthy and have loads of flowers. i water them once a week from the bottom never getting the leaves wet. thanks

Answer: As the plants mature the crowns tend to raise up from the soil and the lower leaves tend to fade and die off. As long as you are not overwatering and the plants seem healthy with no signs of insects or rot at the base, they should be fine. If your plants are fairly old you may want to start some new oneswith leaf cuttings both as insurance and to maintain an ongoing vigorous collection of young but blooming size plants.
