The Q&A Archives: Vegetables Resistant to Nematodes

Question: My mother, who lives in Santa Maria CA, has root knot nematodes in her back yard. Can you provide a list of resistant plants? Thank you for your help. Harold Teising Garden Grove, CA

Answer: Vegetables noted for their resistence to nematode damage include sweet potatoes and members of the cabbage family. Several tomato varieties have also been bred with resistence. You didn't note whether you were looking for vegetables or ornamentals.Marigolds are often planted to deter nematodes. Burpee sells a variety named Nema-gone which has been developed for this purpose. You can either plant an area completely in marigolds, followed by your chosen crop, or you can interplant with the marigolds. You can also try solarizing the soil--till the area, wet it down, then cover with clear plastic for a month. This essentially "cooks" the soil, killing any nematodes in the top few inches of soil.
