The Q&A Archives: Using Human Hair as a Rabbit Deterrent

Question: After consulting your library about deterring rabbits, I noticed you did not mention anything about human hair. Is this an old wives' tale or does it actually work? Jennifer Kauffman West Allis, WI

Answer: There have been claims that human hair placed in a variety of ways in a garden will deter all sorts of pests. In orchards, for example, hanging a mesh bag of hair is reputed to deter deer. Most likely the scent of humans frightens the animals. Unfortunately, most creatures quickly get used to any scent deterrent. It certainly won't hurt, so why not give it a try?
