Assuming I could find a source of strawberry plants in the fall, which may an incorrect assumption, but if so, is there any reason they couldn't be planted at this time of year, like some other perennials?

Strawberries may tend to heave out of the ground during the soil's freeze and thaw cycles, so they are traditionally planted in the spring which allows them a full season to reestablish their root systems before the freezing weather. The plants also usually have their blossoms removed prior to being planted (to reduce stress) so they would not bear that first year in any case. Although it might be worth a try if you have access to plants, I am not sure you would gain much from trying it in the fall.
