Unfortunately, based on your description I am unable to determine what is happening to your plants, although it sounds as though a fungal or disease problem is beginning. You might want to consult with or take a sample to your county extension (566-0673 or 328-4800) for identification and suggested steps to take, if any. In the meantime, do not work on the plants when they are damp, avoid overhead watering, and clean up and destroy any fallen leaves to try to limit the infection.
