I had brick flower boxes built into the front steps of my house that measure 6" by 3'. I want to grow a colorful arrangement of flowers (preferably perennials) that do not reach higher than 12"-14". I live in NYC. It receives full sun from 12 noon on. I have mums in there now and I am not happy with them. What can I use ?

I hope the measurement is actually six feet rather than six inches, because six inches is so narrow that you may have trouble providing enough soil for the perennials to root into. You might look at a selection of sun loving plants such as early and snow crocus for early spring, violas, smaller sedum varieties, succulents such as hens and chicks, herbs such as creeping thyme, and possibly a shorter type of dianthus such as "Bath's Pink". Other possibilities would be veronica "Goodness Grows", the pink coreopsis rosea, and some of the very dwarf daylilies. For all season bloom however you might be happier using annuals.
